RG Unicorn Gundam Kit Spotlight: Transformation, Parts and Build Tips

RG Unicorn Gundam box and kit on a neon stage

Few Gunpla kits have a reputation like the RG 1/144 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam. It's a Real Grade that transforms from the white, single-horned Unicorn Mode into Destroy Mode, splitting its armor open to reveal a glowing red psycho-frame. Here's what's in the box, what it's like to build, and who should pick one up.

At a glance: Real Grade, 1/144 scale, about 14 cm tall. Transforms between Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode. Clear psycho-frame parts. Beam magnum, hyper bazooka, shield and beam sabers included. Best as your second or third kit, not your first.

What is the Unicorn Gundam?

The RX-0 Unicorn Gundam is the hero suit of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, set in the Universal Century timeline a few years after Char's Counterattack. Pilot Banagher Links discovers the suit can transform: its armor slides apart, the single horn splits into Gundam's V-fin, and the psycho-frame underneath glows. That transformation is the whole appeal of the kit.

What's in the box

  • The Unicorn Gundam, built on Real Grade's inner frame with clear red psycho-frame parts
  • Beam magnum with removable cartridges
  • Hyper bazooka
  • Shield, which also transforms
  • Two beam sabers
  • A sticker sheet and the instruction manual

There's no stand in the box. For flying or action poses, add an action base.

The transformation

This is the reason to buy the RG Unicorn. You don't swap parts between modes; the same kit transforms:

  • The armor panels on the chest, arms and legs slide open to expose the psycho-frame.
  • The legs extend and the frame locks into its longer Destroy Mode proportions.
  • The horn splits into the V-fin.
  • The shield opens up to match.

Each section has locking and linking parts so the armor stays where you put it. It takes patience the first time. Follow the manual's transformation pages, move one section at a time, and don't force anything.

Weapons and display options

The beam magnum and hyper bazooka can mount on the rear skirts or the backpack when they're not in hand, so you can display the Unicorn carrying its full loadout. The shield locks onto the arm in more than one position.

What it's like to build

Plan on 5 to 10 hours, which is typical for a Real Grade. Builders who've put this one together tend to say the same things:

  • The frame feels sturdier than older RGs. It's a solid kit once it's together.
  • The joints are tight. That's good for holding poses, but take your time when you transform it.
  • Be gentle with the knees. The legs have to pull down to expose the psycho-frame at the knee. Hold the thigh and shin, not the small armor pieces.
  • Small parts and stickers. Tweezers make the stickers much easier.

Tips for a smooth build

  1. Cut every part with nippers and clean the nubs. Leftover nubs on frame parts can make transformation stiff. Our nub mark guide shows how.
  2. Build it in Unicorn Mode first, then transform it once to make sure every section moves.
  3. Panel line the white armor in gray before you snap it on. See how to panel line Gunpla.
  4. Store the kit in the mode you display most. Transforming it again and again wears the joints.

Who it's for

  • Great pick if: you've built a couple of HGs and want a showpiece that does something special. It's also a perfect gift for Gundam Unicorn fans.
  • Maybe wait if: it would be your very first kit. Start with a modern HG and come back to this one. Our best first Gunpla kits guide has easier picks.
  • Want it bigger? The Unicorn also comes in Master Grade and Perfect Grade. Compare sizes in our grade guide.

FAQ

Does the RG Unicorn transform without swapping parts?

Yes. The same kit moves between Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode, with the armor sliding open to show the psycho-frame.

Is the RG Unicorn hard to build?

It's a medium-difficulty Real Grade. The build itself is fine for anyone who has finished an HG; the transformation just takes patience.

Does it come with a stand?

No. Add an action base if you want flying poses.

Do I need to paint it?

No. It's molded in color, including the clear red psycho-frame. Panel lining and a topcoat are optional upgrades.
